Transport
PLANEIt is the best and the fastest option. Ethiopian Airlines are one of the best airline companies in Africa.
Service, aircrafts and also airports are on very high level. E.G. we were shocked from Lalibela
airport which was all in marmor and wood, very clean and .... in the middle of nowhere.
The connections are on time but you have to confirm your flight 24-48 hours before departure
at any Ethiopia Airlines office(or phone confirmation in Adis 616161). The prices are moderate
and it was possible to buy them directly in Prague (one-way Adis-Lalibela 3600CZK/90USD, Lalibela-Gondar 50USD)
. We wanted to visit Lalibela and air-transport saved us about 5 days in a bus! If you do not have at least
one month in Ethiopia and would like to visit Lalibela I'am suggesting take flight to Gondar via Lalibela as we did.
Airticket prices:
Adis-Lalibela 755 Birr, Lalibela-Gondar 355 B, Bahir Dar 598 B (for locals 255 B !!).
Is an interesting alternative which is not known to much. There exists market with vacant 4x4 wheel
cars (state owned mostly) which ofter runns between the cities. So called "Brokers" are hunting for passangers.
The voyage is much faster (e.g. Bahir Dar-Adis 9 hours, otherwise 2 days by bus) and much more convenient.
The price is about 3-4 times higher than by bus but 4x lower than by aircraft. Example prices:
Bahir Dar - Adis bus 53B, landcruiser 170-200B, plain 598B. Brokers are situated mostly around bus stations or
higher class hotels.
Typical transport in Ethiopia. It is remarkable experience suitable only for the strongest. The buses are very old wrecks with banches for three. They are mostly overpacked. Typical picture is: chickens under seats, somebody with thuberculosis cought on a back, women with children+20 flyes, dust everywhere on air. Buses are probably without suspensors thus after few hours of drive you are completely "tired". They are mostly starting from towns at 6:30 a.m. (12:30 o'clock of Ethiopian "special" time). At 6 a.m. gates of the bus stations are open and rush to buses starts. In complete chaos foreigners are mostly looosing and bus is often full. It is good to make a friend a local policeman which helps and eventually let you come to buses just before gates are opening (as we did in Gondar). The prices for tickets are low 1B=10km (e.g. Bahir Dar - Adis 53B, Bahir Dar-Gondar 18B?, Gondar-Debark 10,20B, Bahir Dar-Tis Abbay 3B, Adis-Debre Zeyit 3,5B).
TRUCKSWe didn't used. It's just additional possibility. Maybye more comfortable then bus but in most cases also slower!
TRAINIn Ethiopia is only one railway line Adis-Djibuti. We haven't used this.
SHIPJet boat - mostly on Lake Tana. We payed for a trip with visit of 5 monasteries (2x on Zege
peninsula, 3x in islands). The price for such a trip is around 40-50B per person. Next location where we met
jet boat was close to Blue Nile Falls where it cost 10B/person.
Ferry boat - across Tana lake from Bahir Daru to Gongove. Second ferry goes from Bahir Daru to Zege (monasteries)
at 6 a.m. for 3B). This ferry line supposed to be open for foreigners. The ferry is waiting approx.
5 hours in Zege and than sail back to Bahir Dar (not checked personaly).
Papyrus boat - it is possible to use for 2B appyrus boats from Bahir Daru to Centimeri island with
monastery.
In Bahir Dar we rented a bike (2B per hour, just before the Telecom Building) and did a trip to Heilie Selassie palace on a hill away of the city. It is a wonderful ride alongside Nile river up to hill with fascinating view (sunset!).
TAXIWe tryied to use taxi as low as it is possible. We were cheated just after arrival in Adis for trip airport-Czech embassy for 45B. The normal price should be 10-20B. In other cities 5-10B
MINIBUSproviding transport from the airports to the centers (Lalibela 30B, Gondar 20B/os). In public transport (0,75B-1B).
