Ethiopia - broken myths and impressions

In Ethiopia people are dying from starvation .... TV spots showed around the world are mostly related to eastern lowlands (border with Somalia) where every 10th year rain season is missing and causes draught and famine. The biggest area of the country is located on Ethiopian plateau / highlands with sifficient water and food. Currently food is nearly everywhere, especially steaks!

.... only desert is there .... Ethiopian highlinds in rainy season (ending October) and cca two month after is a beautiful green countryside with forests and endless crop fields. We were there on middle of November and flowers were everywhere with a lot of streams. The countryside reminded us Bohemian highlands or mountain picture from Romania. The very best time should be from end Oct untill middle of November.

... and very very hot .... One of the biggest surprice was that we suffered in Ethiopia more from cold than from hot. Only health problems were flu and cold. Just Adis Abeba is the third highest capital in the world in elevation 2600m. During the night temperature goes to 8-12 deg. during the day 23-25 deg. In Simien mountains was bitterly cold. Temperature during the night around zero and on the highest summits Ras Dashen and Bwahit some snow !
